Well, ever since I can remember my older brother Chris has been playing piano and he used to do recitals and stuff. So sometimes he would play random songs to practice. One of those songs would always be The Scientist, but of course I didn’t know what that was back then. Now I was like 7 or 8 when he started playing that and he used to sing the words too. And he played it so much and sang it so much that pretty soon I learned all the lyrics. I didn’t know that this was by Coldplay or anything I didn’t even know who they were. He never played it anymore after that because he stopped piano. So when I heard the actual, real song by them (now knowing who Coldplay was) in 2006 after all those years I came to love it even more and took to trying to learn it on piano just like my brother. It didn’t sound nearly as good as he played it though. But then as I got to know and love Coldplay even more I heard all the tracks on AROBTTH and by that time only their first three records had been released. But I always took a special liking to AROBTTH I think because the mood and vibe of the record is so full of energy in the beginning and then it kinda slows down at its conclusion but maybe also because I miss my brother Chris playing and singing The Scientist almost everyday. Though now I don’t mind at all hearing a 398745987320208567 times more handsome and talented Chris playing it and singing it everyday (shhhh don’t tell my brother I said that).
I actually began looking deeper into Coldplay’s music when Viva la Vida was released, and up until that point the only song I knew off of AROBTTH was ‘Clocks’. Even the first time I listened to the album, I wasn’t as fond of it, but now, for me A Rush Of Blood To The Head is ultimately my favorite Coldplay album. It has a uniqueness that I’ve never really heard from any other artist, I think it’s definitely something special. I realized that most all of the songs had a little bit of brightness as well as a little bit of darkness, which was really what made me take interest in the album- it was different and interesting. I remember the first time I listened to ‘Politik’ and thought it was just so incredibly strange, almost too strange but when I really took time to feel the music, I ended up loving it so much. And that’s pretty much what happened with every song, making me adore the entire album. Honestly, I can’t even fully describe why exactly I love it so incredibly much, but every element of this album is absolutely genius (even the music videos). My favorite Coldplay song ever is also on this album, God Put A Smile Upon My Face, which is just one more reason for me to love it.
AROBTTH is the first Coldplay album I ever had. I was 8 years old! I played the CD so much that it broke after a while, and I was forced to buy another one.
I think A Rush of Blood to the Head is Coldplay’s overall best album. The first five songs of the album are Politik, In My Place, God Put a Smile Upon Your Face, The Scientist, and Clocks. WOW. I mean, such a powerhouse! It’s like…the Coldplay 5! There was a long time where all five of these were played live (Politik is the only song that’s been taken out now). The latter half of the album is very strong too - Daylight, Green Eyes, A Whisper, Warning Sign, A Rush of Blood to the Head, and Amsterdam. We’ve heard a lot of these songs live recently as well.
AROBTTH is one album that cannot be beat. The material that Coldplay included on this is their strongest yet (Viva la Vida is very close though). I will always feel very passionate about AROBTTH :)
